I really love Shorewall for configuring Linux firewalls, and if you have enough space on your router I would highly recommend eventually using it instead of the built-in configs. Not really much I can say about firewalling on the things. Otherwise you will be locked out and pretty much have no choice but to start over. The biggest advice I can give you if you start doing tricky things with your vlans is this: always, always, always, always, always (unless you've done something really tricky) have port 5 on one of your vlans. The asterisk denotes that the pvid of port 5 is 0.) This makes two vlans, putting port 0 (uplink) on one of them, and the internal ports on the other vlan (with port 5, the internal port, on the inside. Though the router only has two interfaces, you can split one of them (the one that goes to the switch) into virtual interfaces by configuring the switch with vlans (which, if you're unfamiliar, should just be thought of like this: you use a vlan to split one switch into multiple smaller switches.) This stuff is defined in /etc/config/network, and it looks roughly like this: config switch eth0 Five of them are on the back, with one of those labeled "uplink" or something the sixth is an internal connection directly to the router portion. The router itself has two network interfaces: one is wireless, and the other goes to the switch. You should think of your router as two logical units: a switch, and the router itself. One of the harder things to get your head around is the internal configuration of the router. A lot of it tends to assume you have a good grasp of the networking fundamentals of how the thing works, though. The OpenWrt site's documentation section is pretty much all up-to-date and correct, though you'll likely find that the wiki has lots of outdated information. If you're interested in having a nice GUI and some user-friendly features, check out the X-Wrt project, which my boyfriend makes me use so he can configure the router as well.

I can browse the files in my router and see these rules in tmp\.rc_firewallīUT when I look at the file tmp\.ipt (which I assume is an iptables file), there are a lot of extra rules, including prerouting rules, forwarding, etc.

Posted: Fri 12:33 Post subject: iptables vs SPI vs GUI firewall rulesįrom a lot of Googling (including this thread:, it sounds to me like the way the firewall works in DD-WRT is this: DD-WRT comes with a simple SPI firewall and then any rules I write in the firewall script section of the GUI are applied as well, and that's it.
